What is it all about?
Un Flattered by the agony, irony, cry of the common man with `A Wednesday' its producers choose to be `influenced' by the dark edgy Spanish thriller `Box 507'.
JohnDay directed by first timer Ahishor Solomon shows the film and the filmmaker in complete command of its technical craft but little control over his sensational and gory impulses that turn a potential edge of the seat, dark and brooding thriller into undesired deceitful in the end.
The Story
Influenced by the Spanish thriller Box 507the writers Kartik Krishnan and Ahishor Solomon succeed in giving some individuality to the lead actors but struggles to do the same for the film where an honest banker John Day (Naseeruddin Shah) and a corrupt impulsive police officer Gautam (Randep Hooda) cross paths to find something in common that reminds of their individual dark past..
What to look out for
Certainly the movie does introduce a fine talent in Ahishor Solomon who as the helmer showcases his fine sense of visual mannerisms and imagery. It stays loyal to its genre for quite some time thanks to Sandeep Chowta's score and Prakash Kutti's lense work..
The individual scenes of Naseer and Hooda are brilliant. The performance of high standards where Naseer gives an unfussy portrayal, Randeep Hooda is mighty peculiar as the menacing police officer..Kazan adds oomph, Vipin Sharma is fine. Sharat Saxena is decent.
What not
Bollywood and its flattery with the thrillers of the west still continues.. and there is no harm in getting inspired but ending up being insipid spoils the fun.. John day suffers from the same disease.. it gives an impression of an edge of dark edge of the seat thriller but in its due course looses steam. The individual scenes are fine but at some point the brutality is undefined.
Conclusion: John Day is an example where we see a filmmaker in complete command over his technical craft till the end but slowly and surely losing control over his impulses and the grip of the subject.
