Jimmy Fallon has issued an apology to the staff of The Tonight Show following allegations of a toxic work environment. Rolling Stone recently published claims from current and former employees, including production crew and writers, detailing a challenging work atmosphere behind the scenes of the late-night program.
During a Zoom meeting with Tonight Show staff, Fallon expressed embarrassment and remorse. He stated, It's embarrassing, and I feel so bad. Sorry if I embarrassed you and your family and friends. Fallon emphasized his desire for the show to be fun, inclusive, and the best it can be.
Rolling Stone reported allegations of outbursts from Fallon and cited multiple sources claiming that previous senior staff members had bullied and belittled employees. Guest dressing rooms were reportedly known as cry rooms, where staff could release their stress.
Nine showrunners have cycled through The Tonight Show since Fallon took over in 2014, a faster turnover than comparable late-night shows. Former employees revealed a challenging work environment where people walked on eggshells to avoid upsetting Fallon.
Representatives for Fallon declined to comment on his alleged behavior, while an NBC spokesperson stated that they investigate and take action on employee concerns as appropriate.
The Tonight Show is currently on hiatus due to ongoing strikes in Hollywood, with Fallon and other late-night hosts working together on a podcast to support their staff during the strikes.
In light of these allegations, Fallon's apology acknowledges the need for a healthier and more respectful work environment on the show.
