After a request from a prisoner in Kannur central jail, actor Jayaram has gifted 11 chandai melams to convicts who are interested in practising the instrument.

Following an initiative by jail officer Asokan, 11 convicts in the Kannur prison learnt chandai melam last year, by hiring the instrument on rent. However, they could not continue with their interest due to lack of own instrument.

Hence, one of the 11 prisoners penned a letter to Jayaram, who is passionate towards chandai melam, that they would be grateful if he could get them the musical instrument. Accepting the request, Jayaram gifted them 11 melams, making the convicts happy.
