The year 2015 will be an important year in Jayam Ravi`s career. His first release this year was the romantic comedy Romeo Juliet` which has been declared a hit film and this success came as a refreshing break after back to back flops and unexpected gaps between one film and another which is a more severe harm in an young actor`s career. Within two months came the rural family entertainer Sakalakalavallavan` which is still holding on to the screen despite getting mixed reviews.
This week Thani Oruvan` is going to hit the screens as the third film for Ravi this year which is extra special for him not just for the number alone. For every actor, playing the role of a cop would be a dream and this is the first film for Ravi to wear the kakhi. Moreover he is pairing up with his brother director Mohan Raja who has been the sculptor of the initial days of his acting career and the duo has a fantastic success rate.
This is the twelfth year for Ravi as hero and his career so far has been a mixed bag of successes and failures. But the array of roles he has portrayed in these years proves his versatility and admirable caliber as an actor.
The surprise blockbuster of 2003, Jayam` was Ravi`s first film as a hero which made people notice him as a charming boy next door. Immediately he turned action hero in his second film M.Kumaran Son of Mahalakshmi`and more than convincingly portrayed the role of a brawny kick-boxer. Once he ventured out of his brother fold and started working with new directors Ravi had to face flops in Dass` Mazhai`and Idhaya Thirudan`. After three continuous flops Ravi was bailed out by his brother again with Unakkum Enakkum`. In this film Ravi acted as a free minded London born youngster in the first half who transforms into a successful farmer in the second half. The film`s stupendous success added crucial brownie points to Jayam Ravi`s career.
Ravi`s body of work and his suitability of various roles had made a good impression by then- a fact which was proved by acclaimed director Lingusamy picking him as the hero for his first production venture Deepavali` directed by Ezhil . This was one of the initial films to portray a north Chennai lower middle class guy as a hero and Ravi`s portrayal of the character Billu was closer to real.
Deepavali` was followed by Santosh Subramaniam` which was Ravi`s fourth film with his brother and also a remake of a super hit Telugu film. The film showed Ravi as a do-gooder son with immense respect and fear for his father and the actor portrayed the subdued role that unleashes its emotions in a particular scene towards climax.
After this Ravi paired up with ace cinematographer-director Jeeva for Dham Dhoom` but unfortunately the director passed away amid the making of the film. The film finally managed to release after long delay but did not make any wonders at the box office but Ravi`s performance as a innocent youngster made a scapegoat in a foreign land under hostile conditions was highly appreciated.
Next came Peranmai` directed by S.P.Jananathan and this film can be safely named as Ravi`s best film so far. The urbane actor went for a complete makeover, sported abs and played the role of a forest guard Dhruvan who faces humiliation on the grounds of his tribal background turning up to save the nation from an imminent foreign threat. The film was not just a commercial success but also received enormous critical acclaim and placed Ravi in the list of actors who can be trusted for any kind of role.
Immediately after such a great elevation Ravi paired up with his brother for the fifth time to deliver Thillalangadi` which failed at the box office. Then he acted as a romantic hero after a long time in Engeyum Kadhal` directed by Prabhu Deva and this film managed to pull the returns.
Director Ameer`s Aadhi Bhagawan` was delayed for long and that resulted in an unwanted break in Ravi`s career at a crucial moment when his peers were fast climbing up the ladder. When the film finally released in 2013 Ravi`s efforts to portray the role of a villain with womanly attributes ended in vain.
Even after this debacle Ravi`s prospects looked promising as he paired up with director Samuthirakani for Nimirndhu Nil`. In this film Ravi portrayed dual roles and one was that of a honest youngster who spearheads a revolt against corruption. The film despite having a promising theme and garnering mixed reviews failed at the box office.
Amidst these Ravi acted as a boxer again in Booloham` directed by Kalayanakrishnan a former assistant to Jananathan. The film has been completed long ago but could not release due to financial woes.
The unique aspect of Ravis acting career is that almost all of his films have been worthy of family viewing and he has always portrayed dignified roles. Ravi may not be a star who has thousands of fan clubs but as an actor he is in the good books of every movie buff and his name is definitely a factor of attraction for any film.
The trailers of Thani Oruvan` promises to have all potentials to place Ravi in the league of top rated stars and make him the most sought after hero and also unveil another facet of the fantastic actor in him.
Indiaglitz wishes Ravi the very best for that to happen.
