For an actress discovered by the legendary film wizard Satyajit Ray in his Bengali film MAHANAGAR (1963) and groomed by stalwart filmmakers like Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Gulzar, Jaya Bhaduri was bound to be a genius and she proved it with her movies each better than the other.
Beginning with Hrishikesh Mukherjee`s GUDDI, she left both the critics and the cinegoers dumbfounded with her mesmerizing performance.

Readers would be surprised to know that Jaya Bhaduri wrote a new history in Filmfare Awards in her debut year 1972. That year she was in the race for Best Actress category in two films viz. GUDDI and UPHAAR, while Asha Parekh for KATI PATANG. Though the Filmfare judges judged Asha Parekh as the Best Actress in KATI PATANG but the y were in a tight corner as Jaya Bhadhuri was extremely good in UPHAAR.
Hence after lot of discussions the jury decided to motivate the young talent by instituting a Special Award for Jaya Bhadhuri in UPHAAR!
What makes Jaya Bhadhuri exceptional is that in a career as small as just four years (1972 -1976) she displayed a rare range of performances like the deaf and dumb in KOSHISH, the cancer patient in MILI, the young and bubbling in JAWANI DIWANI, the widow in SHOLAY, the strong lady in KORA KAGAZ and the ideal wife in ABHIMAAN.
In her second inning she once again stole thunder by winning Filmfare Award in SILSILA opposite Rekha and did many more thought provoking and intelligent roles like HAZAAR CHAURASI KI MAA, FIZA, KABHI KHUSHI KABHIE GHAM..., KAL HO NAA HO.
In nutshell she has proved to be a rare jewel of Indian Cinema.
