News has now emerged that MGM Studios is rolling the next film in the Jackie Chan-Owen Wilson starrer 'Shanghai' series aptly titled 'Shanghai Dawn'. The third film in the 'Shanghai Noon' series, 'Shanghai Dawn' will see both Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson reprising roles of Chon Wang and Roy O`Bannon. As of now, the film is in the preliminary stages and is is currently seeking writers.
'Shanghai Noon' was a combination of the Western and Kung Fu genres leading to a high action-comedy entertainer. The film was a fresh whiff of air when it was released released in 2000 and performed close to $100 million at the global Box Office. The film was fresh off the success of Jackie Chan's other successful film franchise 'Rush Hour'. A sequel, 'Shanghai Knights' was released in 2003 which saw the pair travelling to London for an adventure. The film grossed around $88 million at the global box office.
Talks for a third film in the series first came up when 'Shanghai Knights' had released. Owen Wilson said in an interview in 2003 that, “There`s talk about going to Egypt. “This does seem like a Hope/Crosby thing. You can put the characters in all different situations and it works.” However, nothing much beyond this had been realized.
So, the question now would be whether Chon Wang and Roy O'Bannon would head to Egypt as Owen Wilson had mentioned in 2003 or are they set for a new destination? Let us know in the comments below!
