The Andhra Pradesh government has said that it will issue uniform registration numbers for vehicles across the state.  The practice of according different codes to different districts will be done away with from now.   'AP 39' is the new uniform code for the entire state.  The decision will come into force this month itself.

Transport Minister K Atchannaidu said that his initiative will help in curbing fake resident certificates being used during registration by residents belonging to some other district. He added that all the new vehicles registered anywhere in AP will have ‘AP 39’ as code.

Transport Commissioner N Balasubramanyam is looking at maximizing the state revenue by leveraging the new code to issue fancy numbers.  The Road Transport Authority's additional revenue through fancy numbers this year was Rs 2.98 crore.
