Income Tax officials burst crores-worth cricket gambling racket which had been operating from Gurgaon, an industrial town near national capital New Delhi.
Acting on a tip-off, the Income Tax officials raided the suburbs of the capital including Gurgaon and found out a hi-tech ‘operating room’ with state-of-the-art communication equipment which was being used as a ‘master room’ for the cricket gambling activities. Preliminary raids revealed that the brokers who had been operating from the room had established contacts with ‘brokers’ or ‘agents’ across all major cities in the country.
It also came to the fore that money to the tune of Rs.100 crores had been gambled at the room. The raids resulted in the seizure of cash of Rs.2 crores, foreign currency notes worth several crores, 27 cell-phones, lap-top, etc.
One person has so far been arrested in the case while the owner of the premises was also being interrogated. Following raids at Gurgaon, the officials are now planning to raid specific gambling outlets at Goa, New Delhi and Kolkata and a few other cities.
