ISRO launched the 3,477 kg communication satellite GSAT-17 earlier today on board the Ariane-5 rocket from the French Guiana.

This is the third satellite launched by ISRO this month, after GSLC MkIII and the PSLC C-38 from Sriharikota, and the 21st satellite that Arianespace has launched for ISRO since 1981.

The GSAT-17, with payloads in the normal C, extended C and S bands, carries meteorological data relay equipment as well as equipment for satellite-based search and rescue operations and has been inducted with the INSAT/GSAT system. It has a life expectancy of 15 years.

ISRO`s Master Control Facility (MCF) in Karnataka will perform the initial orbit raising maneuvers.

Ariane-5 also launched Hellas Sat 3-Inmarsat S EAN along with GSAT-17.
