Is UTV planning distribution tie-up with Balaji?

Despite five major releases scheduled the same day, including "Main Aisa Hi Hoon", "Mere Jeevan Saathi" and "Bachke Rehna Re Baba", UTV Pictures is going to release Balaji Films' "Kya Kool Hai Hum" May 6.

"The ones who are threatening to release their films on the same day have been doing so for the past many months. Even if they do go ahead, I can see that our film is the best of the lot. There is no cause for worry," says Sanjeev Mehta, vice-president of distribution, UTV Pictures.

UTV has confirmed a select chain of theatres for the film well in anticipation of the flood of releases likely to hit the theatres in May.

"We started work on the release strategy the day we struck the deal with Balaji after seeing a significant portion of the film. It is a very promising comedy indeed," Mehta adds.

The buzz doing the rounds is that UTV is working on a long-term tie-up with Balaji Productions for the distribution rights of all their forthcoming films. Mehta does not deny the possibility.

"We have discussed a tie-up with Balaji over a long period of time," he admits.

UTV has a promising line-up of releases in the coming months starting with "Kya Kool Hai Hum", followed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra's "Parineeta", Vashu Bhagnani's "Shaadi No. 1" and Feroz Nadiadwala's "Deewane Hue Pagal".

UTV is also exploring the business of English films with the many Hollywood films that it recently acquired such as "Sin City" and "The Myth".
