It has been reported that former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Raghuram Rajan's name features in the list of probables that are under consideration to receive the Nobel Prize for Economics.
Nobel Prizes under various disciplines for 2017 are being announced in a phased manner. It is in this backdrop that a report, whose genuineness has been confirmed, which says that Rajan is one of the probables to receive the coveted award, assumes huge significance.
The list, prepared by Clarivate Analytics, has names of six economists across the globe including our own Rajan, who was ‘eased’ out as Governor of RBI as he was reportedly 'unhappy' with the BJP-led Centre's 'demonetization drive' launched around the same time last year. Due to the differences of opinion with the Centre, Rajan’s term, which ended on 04th September last year, was not extended.
An author of many books on economics, Rajan had rightly predicted that American economy would undergo a huge recess in 2008, which turned out to be the case. Rajan has also worked in International Monetary Fund, being the first non-Western young economist to be associated with IMF. He and his well-wishers are obviously tense as the Nobel Prize for Economics is to be announced today (Monday).
