At a time when ghosts are ruling Kollywood comes ‘Iruvar Ondranaal’ which is surprisingly entertaining in spite of all newcomers in the cast and crew.
The movie begins in a college campus where we are introduced to Kaushik (P.R.Prabhu) an easy going guy with both male and female friends. One of his friends Shylo (Shailendari) proposes to him on Valentines’ Day which he rejects citing that he wants to remain a friend. Flashback to school and early college when two more friends Dhiya (Dheekshitha) and Lakshmi (Karthika Menon) propose to him with the same result. Kaushik while travelling in a car with his dad sets his eye on scooty riding Oviya (Krithika Malini) and it is love at first sight and the rest of the story deals with how he woos her leading to a climax where there is a ‘Kalaai’ twist.
P.R. Prabhu makes a promising debut as Kaushik and has given a neat performance in all the scenes and it seems like comedy is his forte which he should exploit further in his forthcoming projects. Prabhu is also a good dancer who dominates in the song sequences. Krithika Malini as Oviya is pleasing to the eye. Shravya as the heroine’s friend and Akil as the hero’s friend are both natural and so is the girl who plays the hero’s sister. All the other actors have done justice to their roles.
Director Anbu G a former associate of A.R. Murugadoss has extracted good performances from an all new cast and also given a clean entertainer sans vulgarity and crassness which is dominant in films of this genre. Cinematographer Kumar Sridhar, Editor Paramesh Krishna and Art Director Kalai Murugan have done a neat job. A major plus for the film is the music of Guru Krishnan and the dance choreography by Prabhu Dhanasekar which is colorful and vibrant.
On the downside the three flashbacks in the first half all have the similar events unfolding making it repetitive and is tedious viewing.
Verdict : An appreciable effort by newcomers which is worth a watch
Rating : 2.5/5
