Hardly the actor would have thought a simple film's promotion could lead to national uproar. During the promotional event of his upcoming film 'Madaari', Irrfan Khan attracted the wrath of Islamic heads over his views on Ramzaan and Qurbaani.

The 'Piku' famed actor aired his concern whether the real meaning behind the rituals of Ramzan and the act of sacrifice had been lost. Irrfan was quoted, "We have forgotten the real meaning of rituals. We have made them a tamasha (scene)."

The actor had further commented, "Qurbani means sacrificing something close to your heart and sharing with others. Today,you buy a goat from the market for sacrifice. It is something to think about, it is a matter of common sense, we all should ask ourselves how sacrificing another life earns us any goodwill."

Irrfan also commented that one has made a mockery of Muharram, which is actually observed as a day for mourning. But instead, we take out processions, Irrfan pointed.

He was of the opinion that one has to thoroughly understand the meaning of these rituals or they can be misused. Irrfan also stressed on the fact as to why Muslim leaders didn't speak up on terrorism.

Reacting sharply to Irrfan's comments, some religious leaders remarked that performers don't know much about religion and advised him (Irrfan) to stay within his limits. While Zafaryab Gilani of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board commented that "such comments are condemnable."

Over this, Irrfan took to Twitter to clarify his stand, stating that religion is about personal introspection and people, who are upset over his comments, should not jump to conclusion before making any judgement over anyone's views. Tweeted Irrfan, "Pls Bhaiyon, who r upset with my statement, either u r not ready to introspect or u r in a hurry 2 reach 2 a conclusion." He added, "For me religion is abt personal introspection , it's a source for compassion, wisdom and moderation n not for stereotyping n fanaticism." Irrfan also stated that he is not afraid of clerics. "Clerics don't scare me. Thank God I don't live in a country governed by religious contractors," Irrfan wrote.
