IPL teams can retain up to 4 players ahead of the 2022 mega auction? - Hot Update

The cricket carnival IPL 2021 has concluded last week in Dubai International Stadium and Chennai Super Kings became the title winners of IPL 2021. Meanwhile, it is well-known that the upcoming 2022 season of the T20 league will have 2 new teams and the mega auction is in the queue.

The existing IPL franchise won't have the same retention and RTM policies according to BCCI regulations. The official announcement from the BCCI regarding the retention policy ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction is expected to come soon after two new teams are to be confirmed on October 25.

Now, a report from Cricbuzz has stated that 4 players are allowed to be retained by an IPL team. The report reads that BCCI approves the team to keep up to three Indian and two foreign players with the total number of retentions not exceeding four. That is, a franchise can retain 3 Indian players & 1 overseas player or 2 Indian players & 2 overseas players.

Also, a team can retain only two uncapped players. The report added that a formal announcement on the retention rule will be made after the two new franchises are brought onboard. The sale of the two new teams is expected to take place on October 25 in Dubai. The existing teams will not be allowed to use the Right to Match (RTM) option at the mega auction reportedly.

The overall purse for each franchise is said to be 90 crores this year and expected to increase to 95/100 crores in the upcoming years. The two new franchises may be allowed to pick two to three players from outside the auction. The new teams can also pick up to two foreign players in their squad outside the auction if the big Indian names aren’t available.
