A controversial incident happened during CSK's last match against SRH, when the Chennai team's skipper MS Dhoni expressed his disagreement with the umpire's call on a wide ball by Shardul Thakur in the 19th over of the second innings, leading the umpire to retract his original decision.

This did not go down well with cricket fans, as a number of them felt that the umpire was "bullied" into changing his decision. However, many have argued that Dhoni merely expressed his dissent and that the umpire did not have to change his verdict because of that. A video of the delivery by Thakur to Rashid Khan in the 19th over clearly shows the ball outside the wide mark. The video of the same, including Dhoni's subsequent gesture and the umpire's final call, surfaced online immediately after the match. Spinner Harbhajan Singh, who had to sit out of the tournament over personal reasons, reacted to the video with laughing emojis.

Offended by the apparent display of mockery, a few CSK fans called Singh a "traitor" for the jibe. "If Betrayal has a human form, it is @harbhajan_singh. I'm not sure what's going on within the CSK team cuz Raina and Bhajji left for unknown reasons but he shouldn't have trolled his own team and his captain. Absolutely cheap sportsmanship," a user had written on Twitter.
