The Delhi Assembly has reportedly proposed in a resolution that Bharat Ratna to Rajiv Gandhi should be withdrawn over his alleged complicity in the 1984 anti-Sikh pogrom after the assassination of Indira Gandhi.
There has been infighting within Aam Admi Party over the resolution.
Saurabh Bhardwaj of the party said, "It was Somnath Bharti (AAP leader) who scribbled an amendment about Rajiv Gandhi. It wasn't part of the original resolution. Original resolution with demands of declaring 1984 riots as genocide and fast-track courts has been passed. Proposal by Bharti remained a proposal and couldn't be passed."
Meanwhile, AAP MLA Alka Lamba has been asked to resign for going against the proposal to strip the former PM of Bharat Ratna. "Party has asked for my resignation. I am ready to resign but Rajiv Gandhi has sacrificed a lot for country and I didn’t support the proposal in Assembly of taking back his Bharat Ratna. I've been asked to resign because I stood against the decision of the party," Lamba has said in her defence.
The opposition has alleged that the "total infighting" in AAP is a trick. "Some leaders are in support of a resolution against Rajiv Gandhi and some are against. Basically, the AAP leadership is working on the directions of Congress, they just want to misguide people," a BJP leader said.
