Reports today said that hundreds of students are stuck in war-torn Ukraine's Sumy. They have been waiting to be evacuated by the Indian Embassy. On Saturday, a report by The Wire said that Russia has informed the UN Security Council that its buses are ready at crossing points to go to the eastern Ukrainian cities of Kharkiv and Sumy to evacuate Indian students and other foreign nationals.
Speaking to ANI, a student from Ukraine who has been evacuated, said that students who are still stuck in Sumy have nothing to eat and are also facing a shortage of water. He hoped that the ceasefire will help them reach out to borders.
In view of the increased worry, the spokesperson of the External Affairs Ministry today said, "We are deeply concerned about Indian students in Sumy, Ukraine. Have strongly pressed Russian and Ukrainian governments through multiple channels for an immediate ceasefire to create a safe corridor for our students. Have advised our students to take safety precautions, stay inside shelters and avoid unnecessary risks. Ministry and our Embassies are in regular touch with the students."
