A war broke out between Russia and Ukraine last week after the former launched a large-scale invasion on the latter, one of its neighbours to the southwest. Russia initiated several missile attacks on Ukraine and is still continuing its bombing attacks.
While many Indian students residing in Ukraine remain stranded, Poland accepted India's request to allow and aid them in their nation. Now, the latest news is that an Indian student lost his life in the shelling attack by Russia in Ukraine's Kharkiv city. According to sources, the person is identified as Naveen Shekharappa Gyanagoudar originating from Karnataka.
Naveen is a 21-year-old medical student who was a fourth-year medical student at the Kharkiv National Medical University. Arindam Bagchi, the spokesperson for the Union Ministry of Affairs, tweeted, "With profound sorrow, we confirm that an Indian student lost his life in shelling in Kharkiv this morning. The Ministry is in touch with his family. We convey our deepest condolences to the family."
While some reports claim that the student was caught in the Russian shelling when he was standing in a queue at a grocery shop in Kharkiv to buy food, the others suggest that Naveen lost his life in a blast by the Russian army when he was trying to get to the railway station to evacuate from the city. Meanwhile, the Indian government has deployed its airlines and asked the Airforce to evacuate Indians from the war-torn country.
