A man of Indian descent living in New York tragically killed his brother and himself, injuring his mother in the process, according to police accounts.
The man, 33-year-old Karamjit Multani, shot his 27-year-old younger brother Vipanpal on Sunday at their Richmond Hill area home. Law enforcement sources said he committed suicide about two kilometers distant after the shooting.
When police got to the house after getting a distress call about the shooting, they discovered their mother, 52, had a stomach injury and Vipanpal was critically hurt from several gunshot wounds. Later, a gun was found with Karamjit Multani dead next to a street corner, his head shot.
At a nearby hospital, the motherâwhose identity is withheldâreceived medical care and is said to be in stable health.
Rich in Asian heritage, mostly from India or the Caribbean, Richmond Hill is home to close-knit groups like the Punjabi Sikh, who make up 26% of the local population.
Bhupinder Multani, the dead son's father, told CBS New York he was confused and didn't know what had set off his older son's behavior. He said the evening with the family was quiet until Karamjit shot his brother without warning.
Brother-in-law of the deceased Jaspreet Singh remembered Karamjit as a cheerful person. He did, however, voice misunderstanding about the circumstances that led to such a terrible conclusion.
According to New York Post reports, father of three Karamjit was in good financial standing and didn't seem to be having any problems. The terrifying experience of realizing the gravity of the situationâthey first thought the gunshots were firecrackersâwas related by neighbors. The incident has rocked the town, and many are still trying to make sense of what happened.
