Democratic senator and California's former Attorney General, Kamala Harris (54), launched her presidential campaign for 2020 on Monday during her appearance on ABC's “Good Morning America.” Harris is the eighth person to join the race for the party's nomination.

“I love my country,” she announced in the ABC show, adding that she would “fight for the best of who we are.” The California senator, who has been vocal about her distaste for US President Donald Trump, is described as a rising star within the party. Harris became popular with liberal activists when she questioned the Trump administration appointees and officials, including Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and former Attorney General Jeff Sessions, during Senate hearings.

Harris is the daughter of immigrants from India and Jamaica. She portrayed herself as a fighter for justice, decency and equality in the video. “They’re the values we as Americans cherish, and they’re all on the line now,” Harris said. “The future of our country depends on you and millions of others lifting our voices to fight for our American values.”

The announcement was made on the US Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which honors the slain civil rights leader. The day was chosen as a reminder of the aspirational fight for progress.

Along with Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren, Kirsten Gillibrand, Tulsi Gabbard, John Delaney and Julian Castro are among those who have also announced their intentions to run for President in 2020.
