Recently, an espionage racket was cracked by the investigating agencies, who arrested seven Indian Navy personnel for receiving hawala money from agents in Hyderabad and Mumbai. This incident has made the Navy circumspect about the extent to which Pakistani spying agencies are working day and night to do cyber snooping on Indian Naval bases.
Their modus operandi is this. Indian Navy personnel are sent Facebook requests or messages on WhatsApp. The spies from Pakistan pose themselves as women interested in the personnel. Chat conversations of sexual nature happen between them for several days. One fateful day, the Paki spy demands sensitive information related to the location of submarines, etc. from the personnel. If they don't part with the confidential information, they are blackmailed.
In other cases, compromised personnel are lured through hawala money.
As such, the Navy has banned the use of social media sites Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.
And, latest, even smartphones have been restricted "within the area of all naval bases".
