Even while the nation is boiling with the infamous Deepika Padukone's cleavage controversy which has literally taken the media and social networking sites by storm a global study of female characters in popular films across the world has put India on the top of the chart for exposing women and depicting maximum nudity.
The study, supposed to be the First Of its Kind' is conducted by Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, with support from UN Women and The Rockefeller Foundation. The study in its report reveals Indian films, have a significantly higher prevalence of sexualisation of female characters and the movies score low in depicting women in significant speaking roles such as engineers and scientists.
According to the study very few films showed women in professional that are revered in the society i.e. Male characters outnumber female characters as attorneys and judges (13 to 1), professors (16 to 1), and doctors (5 to 1). In contrast, the ratios tipped in favour of females when it came to hypersexualization. Girls and women were over twice as likely as boys and men to be shown in sexualized attire, with some nudity, or thin.
The study discloses that 34% of women characters in India's most popular box office hit movies are shown wearing sexually revealing clothes against a global average of 25%, while 35% were depicted in partially nude scenes against a global average of 24%. Only about a quarter of all speaking characters in Indian films were women as opposed to a global average of 31%.
The study analyzed 120 popular films released between 2010 and 2013 across the most profitable territories internationally including Australia, Brazil, China, France, Germany, India, Japan, Russia, South Korea, United States, United Kingdom, as well as UK-US collaborations.
