Indian badminton player Saina Nehwal has pulled out of the ongoing Thailand Open Badminton Championship after testing positive for the novel coronavirus on Tuesday. Men's singles player H.S. Prannoy has been diagnosed with the viral infection as well.
Saina Nehwal announced a while ago that she has not received her Covid-19 test report yet and that the authorities had informed her that she had tested positive for the virus. Saina as well as H.S. Prannoy have been taken to a hospital in Bangkok for further tests. "I still didn't receive the covid test report from yesterday it's very confusing and today just before the warm up for the match they tell me to got to hospital in bangkok ... saying that I m positive ..according to rules the report should come in 5 hours.. @bwfmedia," Saina mentioned on social media. The Olympic bronze medalist's husband and badminton player Parupalli Kashyap, who was considered a close contact, has been taken to the hospital as well but his report status is not yet confirmed.
The Badminton World Federation (BWF) released a statement saying that all Indian players are currently quarantining themselves. "The entire Indian team has been categorised high risk by Thai health authorities and all players team entourage are currently self-quarantining in their rooms at the hotel and will be subject to a PCR test today. Each individual is subject to daily testing until further notice from the Department of Disease Control, but players can continue to play upon producing a negative result," the BWF said.
