February 19th this year turned out to be a black day for the 'Indian 2' team as a giant crane that was holding a massive light system came crashing to the ground killing Sri Krishna (assistant director), Madhu (Art Assistant) and Chandran (production assistant). The incident happened at night around 9 pm at the EVP Gardens on the outskirts of Chennai where sets were erected and director Shankar escaped miraculously even though he was close to the crash location.
Kamal Haasan and Kajal Aggarwal who were shooting a scene also escaped unhurt and the incident caused the project to a grinding halt which was further delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Kamal, Shankar and Lyca Productions announced relief amounts to the kin of the dead and the injured (close to fifteen persons).
Today in an event headed by FEFSI president R.K. Selvamani, Kamal and Shankar handed over a sum of rupees one crore each as compensation for each of the dead persons relatives. Another crore was given to the injured.
