As the Indian team failed to deliver in the final of the World Test Championship in Southampton, New Zealand clinched the inaugural title of the tournament after defeating India with a comfortable eight-wicket win.
The match went into the reserve day on June 23 with fans hoping that the match might end with a draw but a collapse in India's second innings led to their defeat. Following the match, India's captain Virat Kohli shared a heartwarming message on social media. Alongside a picture of the team huddled together, Kohli wrote, "This isn't just a team. It's a family. We move ahead. TOGETHER." Virat Kohli had earlier disagreed with the manner of deciding the winner of the World Test Championship over a course of just one match.
During the virtual post match press conference, the skipper said, "Well, look, firstly, I'm not in absolute agreement of deciding the best Test side in the world over the course of one game, to be very honest. If it is a Test series, it has to be a test of character over three Tests, which team has the ability to come back into the series or totally blow away the other team. It can't just be a pressure applied over two days of good cricket and then you suddenly are not a good Test side anymore. I don't believe in that."
