India logs 5 million COVID-19 cases; Find out interesting facts

India has hit the 5-million mark in terms of number of COVID-19 cases. India is only the second country to surpass 5 million cases, the first one being the US.

The country has been adding one million additional cases very frequently. Only the first one million cases took much time (137 days). Since then, the country has seen a heavy surge in COVID-19 cases pretty fast. As per journalist Arun Dev, India added the last one million cases in just 10 days. Previously, it took 13 days to reach 4 million cases from 3 million. It had taken 17 days to reach 3 million cases from 2 million. And it had taken 20 days to reach 2 million cases from 1 million.

But active cases are not a big deal:

Recovered cases = 39,37,241 (78.5%)
Active cases = 9,95,286 (19.9%)
Deaths = 81,473 (1.6%)

Prof. Shamika Ravi says, "The country's top 10 hotspot cities (Pune, Bengaluru Urban, Thane, East Godavari, Nagpur, Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Nashik, West Godavari) account for 28% of all cases. Important to note that while cases are rising across most of these places, the fatality rates vary significantly. Some cities have been successful at keeping Case Fertility Rate low."

India's CFR now stands at 1.6%. "CFR is falling steadily in India. But not across all states. Rising CFR is witnessed in Punjab, Kerala, Assam, Puducherry, Ladakh, Goa, Tripura, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim and Manipur," Ravi adds.

Testing numbers:

RT-PCR and Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) capacities have been substantially scaled up in all States. Everyday on an average more than 9.5L samples are tested by Govt labs, & more than 1.2L in Pvt labs, the government said on Wednesday.
