India got the better of Pakistan by inflicting a 2-wicket victory over their archrivals in the blind Cricket world cup finals played at the picturesque Sharjah in the Gulf which had witnessed many an epic battle between the two teams.
India thus not only retained its hold over Pakistan in major tournaments but also retained its position as the world champion as it is also the reigning champion. Held at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, Pakistan won the toss and decided to bat first. With contributions from Muneer (57), Riyazat Khan (48) and captain Nizar Ali (47), Pakistan managed a formidable 308/8 in its stipulated 50 overs.
Durga Rao took 3 wickets for India while Deepak Malik and Prakash took two wickets apiece. Chasing the stiff target which required runs to be scored at 6.18 per over, India coasted to victory with more than 11 overs to spare by hitting the winning runs in the 39th over. Captain Ajay Reddy scored a quick-fire 63 while top order batsman Sunil Ramesh pitched in with a invaluable 93 as India won by two wickets.
India thus remained unbeaten in the tournament and repeated its last year’s feat when it beat Pakistan in the final. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, vice-president Venkaiah Naidu and West Bengal chief-minister Mamata Banerjee were among the celebrities and VIPs who congratulated Team India on winning the world cup.
