The United States' President Donald Trump met with Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan at the White House on Monday, where he made a claim that PM Narendra Modi had sought Trump's mediation to resolve the Kashmir issue and had even stated that he received a request from Modi to do so in a recent meeting with him. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar refuted Trump's claims and stated in the Rajya Sabha that no such request was made by the PM.
"We have seen US President Donald Trump's remarks to the press that he is ready to mediate if requested by India & Pakistan, on Kashmir issue. No such request has been made by PM Narendra Modi to US President. It has been India's consistent position that all outstanding issues with Pakistan are discussed only bilaterally. Any engagement with Pak would require an end to cross border terrorism. The Shimla Agreement&the Lahore Declaration provide the basis to resolve all issues between India and Pakistan bilaterally," MEA Raveesh Kumar said.
In response to the reaction from India to Trump's offer of mediation, PM Imran Khan said, "Surprised by reaction of India to Pres Trump's offer of mediation to bring Pak & India to dialogue table for resolving Kashmir conflict which has held subcontinent hostage for 70 yrs. Generations of Kashmiris have suffered & are suffering daily and need conflict resolution."
