An IIT graduate aged 23 years, Rakesh Jangid, was arrested for using a website to cheat people into applying for a free laptop scheme offered by the new Narendra Modi government to 20 million people. In addition to earning money from advertisements on the website, Jangid also collected the personal information of users who registered their details. Deputy Commissioner of Police in the Cybercrime Unit, Anyesh Roy, said that the website ‘www.modi-laptop.wishguruji.com’ received 1.52 million page views. The advertisements on it were clicked up to 68000 times.

Jangid who had completed a five-year integrated course in economic sciences promoted the website through WhatsApp. He was finally caught through the Cyber Prevention Awareness and Detection (CyPAD) unit and arrested on Sunday. He had misused Google Adsense in order to carry out his scheme. The DCP reported that: “Since the advertisement about free laptops was attractive, the website would get more traffic and hence more ads. He would receive 68% of revenue earned from the ads.” Jangid had planned to sell personal information to cybercriminals.
