Ahead of the release of 'Naa Nuvve' on June 14, Nandamuri Kalyan Ram says that the film is love plus magic. In this interview, he talks about his role, the experience of doing the film, his upcoming films, and more.
What kind of a movie can we expect from 'Naa Nuvve'?
'Naa Nuvve' is a romantic entertainer. It's about love and magic. It's the first time that I have done a full-fledged romance. 'Geethanjali' is my favourite love story. It's PC Sreeram garu who cranked the camera for such a great movie. I came to know a lot about him after I entered the industry. I got an opportunity to work with him, finally.
What difference do you find compared to your previous movies?
I had done only commercial movies before 'Naa Nuvve'. In those movies, my dialogue delivery and body language were fast-paced. However, 'NN' being a pure romance is totally different. Director Jayendra garu belongs to an atypical school. He had us do subtle performances. I was asked not to move my body parts too often, blink my eyes too often, etc. More than delivering the dialogue, what matters more is how you express it. It was a totally new experience to do the movie.
Was it hard to get into the character?
It took time for me to get into the character Varun. Thanks to the director and the cinematographer who took a lot of care, I became confident. I was fast-paced in the beginning. But the duo asked me to slow down. They would ask me to look into the camera and romance. They made me feel the love.
What kind of a person is Varun?
He has done Ph.D, is somewhat egoistic, and is confident. I can't reveal more about my character, as it's a driving force, much like Tamannaah's character, in the movie.
Can we say that you are now a romantic hero?
I am scared of tags. I am ready to do romances in future. I want to do a variety of movies. The film I am doing with KV Guhan belongs to a new genre. I don't want to constrain myself as an actor.
Did you take any reference for playing the role?
I took no reference or inspiration from anybody. I only followed the instructions given by my director and cinematographer. They extracted the level of performance that was needed from me for each of the scenes.
Has it ever occurred to you that you should have done a love story right in the initial years of your career?
Yes, I have felt it. I did tell it to Jayendra garu about it. Had I found a director like him, I would definitely have done a love story long ago. I don't know why nobody came to me offering a pure romance.
Were you apprehensive to do an out-and-out romance like 'Naa Nuvve'?
Every film is a risk in some respect or the other. Nobody can be sure about the success of a movie. Tarak, for example, had done many roles that were beyond his age before 'Brindavanam'. After the film, the audience's expectations from him changed. 'Nannaku Prematho' took him to the next level.
What is the reaction of your family members?
My son has told me I am looking more handsome than ever in the past. It's the best compliment. I was supposed to take off my mush for one of my movies. But my wife was skeptical about it. I finally removed it for this film and she is happy with my look.
How was it working with Tamannaah?
She is very professional. I might not have been able to do this movie but for her. I and she had done rehearsals before going on the floors. We would chat up in free time. We practiced the Tango dance for 8 days under the guidance of professionals. We shot the title song in just 2.5 hours.
How is it going as a producer?
I am doing a film in the direction of Pavan Sadhineni under NTR Arts. I have also teamed up with Gunnam Gangaraju for this movie. He is penning its screenplay and dialogues. We will reveal the cast and crew details soon. My film with NTR will be there in 2019.
Apart from the KV Guhan movie, are you in talks with any director?
Virinchi Varma will narrate a story to me very soon. It will be the final version. The film could go on the floors in August.
