As promised, the KCR government has delivered on its promise of introducing electric double-decker buses in Hyderabad. The same has been described as a landmark public transport story by the who's who of the ruling TRS.
"They will soon be zooming on the city roads," a functionary of the TRS party, who runs official updates regarding various developments, tweeted.
It was in November 2020 that Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao got nostalgic about double-decker buses when a Twitter user tagged him on the pic of an old-time double-decker bus in Hyderabad. Double-deckers have gone out of existence as they were phased out gradually more than two decades ago. He asked authorities to see if such buses can be introduced. That's how the journey began.
Hyderabad is not the only city in India that is making bids to purchase and operate electric double-decker buses. Recently, the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) finalized 40 routes in the Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad areas where double-decker buses will run.
