Hundreds killed as volcano triggers tsunami in Indonesia

A violent tsunami hit the Indonesian coast on Sunday evening, killing about 300 people, injuring many more and devouring whole buildings.  The natural disaster agency of the country couldn't detect early warning signs.  It happened suddenly.

As per early reports, a landslide on the Anak Krakatau volcano is said to have most likely triggered the tsunami.  Aerial footage after the disaster has shown that a thick plume of smoke and ash engulfed the skies above the Anak Krakatau volcano.

Reacting to the calamity, India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, "Saddened by the loss of lives and destruction in Indonesia caused by the Tsunami after the eruption of a volcano. Condolences to the bereaved families and wishing the injured an early recovery. India is ready to assist our maritime neighbour and friend in relief work."
