Director Priyadarshan's "Hulchul" is the story of two estranged families, one headed by the fiery Angaarchand, an influential landlord and the other by Lakshmidevi, a rich landlady from a neighbouring village.

Angaarchand (Amrish Puri) and his family of four sons (Jackie Shroff, Paresh Rawal, Arbaaz Khan and Akshaye Khanna) have taken a vow to stay away from women because of a family tragedy, apparently caused by a woman.

The mere mention of the fair sex is strictly forbidden in Angaarchand's household. On the other hand, Lakshmidevi is waiting for an opportunity to avenge herself against Angaarchand and his family.

Angaarchand's youngest son Jai (Akshaye) and Lakshmidevi's granddaughter Anjali (Kareena) fall in love.

Or do they? In the greatest con of romantic Indian cinema, what follows is a comedy of errors, with the lead pair trying to be constantly one up on the other.
