Hospital resufes to hand over husband’s body over bill; woman goes to HC

At a very saddening incident, wife of a COVID-19 victim has filed a petition in Telangana High Court after the management of Continental Hospitals, Nanakramguda, refused to hand over the body of her husband. In the petition, Kondapuram Lavanya has alleged that the hospital has asked her to first clear the bill of Rs. 6,41,175.63.
As per the report, Kondapuram Mohan Babu was admitted to Continental Hospitals on July 17 with high fever and respiratory problems. The hospital staff took his samples for COVID test and declared that he has tested positive. Since then, the doctors have been treating him for Coronavirus. On July 22, the hospital management informed Lavanya that her husband died of the virus.
Talking to a leading daily, Lavanya said, “I am a daily labourer and my husband worked as a watchman at a theatre in Moosapeta. My husband had no job after the theatre shut down. With no income, it was difficult to meet our daily needs.”
Lavanya was asked to pay Rs 2,50,000 and she borrowed the amount from a family member to pay the hospital bill and a receipt was issued. But on July 22, she was told that the hospital bill is Rs 8,921,175. The victim’s family alleged that after deducting the advance of Rs 2,50,000 and they asked her to pay the rest of the amount.
The victim’s brother Venkatswami Kondapuram said, “The hospital staff is not allowing us to even see his body. The general manage threatened to call the police and we have managed to collected Rs 1 lakh and told them we will pay rest.”
