Hollywood Films WILL Affect Future of Indian Cinema
- IndiaGlitz, [Saturday,April 04 2015]
As in every region, it is a well-known fact that the regional films are always given first priority owing to the demand of the regional language films. However, times are changing and the influence of the West has been upon us for a while now. Hollywood films have always had a faithful audience and over the years the rise in this audience number has been substantially higher.
Hollywood films have so far been released here through digital manufacturers such as UFO and QUBE. These are the technologies which most of the theatres in Tamil Nadu and Kerala are equipped with. It must also be noted that Hollywood films and their dubbed versions were released in screens with 2K resolutions.
The main reason films were being released under the UFO and QUBE formats were because of the security and the quality the technology offers. This was done by a common body DCI under the collective partnership of all the Hollywood studios. Now, there seems to be a change as Hollywood studios are looking beyond the DCI format and going for eCinema systems which makes it cheaper compared to DCI systems and more viable under the Indian economic condition.
Keeping in mind this aspect, since the far number of Indian screens are eCinema screens, Hollywood studios understand the potential for their films to perform at the Box Office if their films are "Indianized". Now, this is at an experimental stage now for eCinema systems when compared to DCI systems since the latter here offers more security. eCinema foraying into DCI territory is basically baby footsteps right now. For example; DCI follows 'Forensic Watermarking'; a feature that enables to detect the source of the original video if it shot on a camcorder with it's date and place mentioned. This feature is now being incorporated into eCinema systems.
The first of the Hollywood films releasing in India under the eCinema format is 'Furious 7' which has been released in around 2000 screens across the country. With such a huge number for a Hollywood film, the scenario has gotten more competitive for Indian regional films.
As of now, only time will tell whether Hollywood films will eclipse the competition of Indian regional films during the time of the release.
These details were provided and explained to us by Mr. Senthil Kumar, Co-founder of QUBE.
