The pregnant woman from Tamil Nadu who contracted HIV after she was given infected blood at a Government Hospital in Sattur earlier in December, gave birth to a baby girl on Thursday.
The pregnant girl went into labor and gave birth to a seemingly healthy baby girl at around 7 PM on Thursday. The dean of the hospital has reported that the baby weighs 1.75 kg and that there aren’t any birth defects. However, a HIV screening, which would be performed on the baby in 45 days, will apparently determine whether or not she had contracted the disease. Meanwhile, preventive care is being given to the infant as well.
The 23-year-old pregnant woman from Sattur was transfused with HIV infected blood of a donor who wasn’t aware of his condition when he donated his blood in 2016. When he learned that he tested positive for HIV in November 2018, he voluntarily informed the lab technicians at the Sivakasi Government Hospital where he had donated blood. The Health Department Officials who were then informed traced the donated blood and brought in the pregnant woman for tests, where she was found to be HIV positive as well.
Following that, Health Officials revoked the services of the lab technician who gave the daily report, the counselor who did not identify that the donor was in the high-risk category, and the blood bank’s medical officer. The donor, who was consumed with guilt by the outcome of the event, had consumed rat poison and breathed his last on December 30.
