Hints about the story of Jananathan's Porambokku

Director S.P.Jananthan is one of the few directors who never stops with the run of mill stuff and always unravels the international nexus that affect the third world countries with his films. His Jeyam Ravi starrer Peranmai is one such film that released in 2009. The acclaimed director is back after a pretty long hiatus to direct a film titled Porampokku (meaning barrel land in Tamil and also used to refer to an useless person). The shoot of the film starring two young and happening stars Vijay Sethupathi and Arya in the; lead is currently taking place in Kulu Manali. Karthika of Ko fame is the lead lady of this film and Shaam who acted as the hero in the director’s debut film Iyarkai is back in the director’s camp with this film.

In this story that supposedly traces the life of two youngsters from entirely different backgrounds, it is said that Aarya dons the role of an Economist who hails from the family of renowned freedom fighter Bhagath Singh who was executed by the British Government during his 20’s for taking part in the Freedom struggle. Vijay Sethupathi acts as a Kalasi Coolie in Railways. Sham acts as a Police officer while Karthika is said to be a College Professor.

When we contacted the Production sources to confirm the roles of the lead actors they confirmed that Aarya acts as the one who belongs to the clan of Bhagath Singh while they kept mum about the roles of the other actors. It is also said that as pet the story, Aarya supposedly acts as Bhagath Singh in a Drama during his college days in Chennai and the particular scene is expected to include his conversation with Vijay Sethupathi about the existing Custodial Laws in India. This could be confirmed with the recent advertisements for the film published in prominent magazines. In those ads, Aarya is seen sitting wearing the dress that resembles Bhagath Singh, beside a picture of real Bhagath Singh.

These details may not give a clear picture about the story of the film but the details especially the inclusion of Bhagath Singh’s character provide ample scope to presume that Jananthan the man who always uses his films as the medium to convey a topical message has decided to question the Custodial laws of India that often raise the ire of Human Rights activists across the country.
