For the very first time, 18 year old Hima Das from Assam has made a record by winning the gold in the 400m race at the World U20 Championships held at Tampere, Finland. This is the first time that an Indian athlete has placed an international track medal. This is athletic history for india.
Hima Das started slow and steady initially, but her amazing gain of speed at the last 80 m assured her an awesome win with a timing of 51.46 seconds. “Her race begins in the final 80 metres. Her progress just shows how much potential she has. It has been just two years since she first wore spikes,” her coach Nipon Das said.
What is more inspiring is that Hima is the daughter of a rice farmer in Dhing village in Nagoan district, Assam. Another surprising fact is that she started training for track only two years back! That means something, we could expect a lot more from her!
Congratulations Hima Das!
