The High Court has ordered the closure of all TASMAC wine shop in the state giving a sort of heartbreak to the booze lovers. The court has stated that sales can, however, continue online and delivered directly to the homes of the customers. Though this could benefit those in towns and cities it could still pose a problem to those living in rural areas.
The decision comes on the heels of a massive 600 new coronavirus cases emerging today in the state taking the total up to 6009. The state-owned wine shops run by TASMAC were closed for the past forty days and when they reopened all over excepting Chennai there were jubilant crowds everywhere with giving scant respect to social distancing. Many videos also showed that the police found it very difficult to control the enthusiastic alcoholic community.
Earlier Kamal Haasan's Makkal Neethi Maiam had approached the High Court seeking the closure of the liquor shop and it is said that the order was passed after hearing this and other similar petitions. The Tamil Nadu government is contemplating to appeal to the supreme court against this high court order.
