Journalism student Valarmathi who has actively participated as well as initiated many people's struggles against the Government was arrested last month under the Goondas Act. The charge against the student activist was that she instigated the people against Government by distributing a notice against the Union Government's Hydrocarbon extraction project in Neduvasal and Kathiramangalam. The police also alleged that she was having contacts with Naxalites. The Periyar University of Salem in which she was pursuing her post graduation course in Journalism had also suspended her She has been lodged in a prison in Coimbatore.
As per the stringent provisions of the Goondas act, the accused cannot be released on bail without a Court order. So Valarmanthi's father Madhaiyan had filed a petition in the Madras High Court against arresting her under the Goondas act. Today the Court heard Madhaiyan's petition and cancelled the detention of Valarmathi under the Goondas act..
This is certainly a relief for Valarmathi as she can hope to get bail and come out of prison now.
