Heroes who turned Superbad in Tamil Cinema
Tamil audiences revere their heroes so much that they have voted into power four film personalities which makes it very hard for the established stars to break away from playing the routine hero and try their hands at villainy. Here we bring you the list of heroes who went on to excel as a villain.
Rajinikanth - 'Enthiran'
Though India's biggest superstar Rajinikanth started his career as a villain he returned to his roots after almost three decades to return to his roots and what a performance from the powerhouse as the robot gone bad.
Kamal Hassan - 'Dasavatharam'
Though Kamal did the villain's role a few years back in 'Aalavandhaan' there is some justification to the character but Fletcher in 'Dasavatharam' is a maniac assassin and the Ulaganayagan plays to the gallery complete with a distinct American accent.
Mohan - 'Nooravathu Naal'
Most people tend to remember Sathyaraj's bald villain as the talking point of Manivannan's trend setting 'Nooravathu Naal' but while the actor was surely menacing with his looks it is Mohan who is revealed as the main antagonist who takes the cake. It is worth mentioning that when doing the film Mohan was already the most successful hero in Tamil cinema.
Karthick - 'Anegan'
The Navarasa Nayagan's comeback to the screens after a long absence and that too as a stylish villain left audiences wanting more of him as his subdued performance and subtle body language takes the character to a different level.
Sathyaraj - 'Isai'
Actor-Director S.J.Suriya's 'Isai' tells the story of a senior music director played by Sathyaraj who cannot stand the fact that his assistant played by S.J.Suriya becomes more successful than him. The character required subtle villainy and the seasoned Sathyaraj gives one of his career best performances in 'Isai'.
Arjun - 'Kadal'
Audiences have never seen action King Arjun in a negative role before and his performance as the evil personified Bergmans in the film is so praiseworthy that it can easily be said that he is the saving grace of the disastrous 'Kadal'.
R.Parthiban - 'Naanum Rowdy Dhaan'
The first time Parthiban played a negative role against another hero has paid him rich dividends as he has received rave admiration for his successful tightrope walk as the ruthless villain with a touch of humor.
R.Pandiarajan - 'Anjathey'
One of the most loved comic heroes of the nineties, R.Pandiarajan stunned audiences with his villain role in 'Anjathey' and credit is due to director Myshkin for bringing out a new dimension to the diminutive Pandiarajan's talent.
Arvind Swamy - 'Thani Oruvan'
No one expected the eternal romantic hero of Tamil cinema to play an outright villain, but Arvind Swamy's turn in 'Thani Oruvan' is so mesmerizing that people have begun to address him as Siddharth Abhimany and the makers of the Telugu remake have rumored to have paid him a ransom to get him to reprise his role.
R.Madhavan - 'Ayutha Ezhuthu'
Audiences were taken by surprise when the most loved romantic hero turned an out and out bad guy under the direction of his guru Maniratnam. We can safely say that no other chocolate boy hero as ever done a villain's role as effectively as Maddy in Ayudha Ezhuthu and his character's growing ambition and unflinching evilness till the end of the film is a treat to watch.
