The BJP has alleged that the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation in 2005-06 received donations from the Chinese regime. The Congress-led UPA was in power at that time. For the uninitiated, the RGF has been registered as a charitable organization. Sonia Gandhi is its chairperson.
BJP’s Amit Malviya has lashed out at the opposition party for "taking" funds from both the Chinese embassy in Delhi and the government of China. Taking to Twitter, Amit Malviya asked questions of the Congress. "These donations to RGF, if you can still call them that, have any connection with the MoU signed between the Congress and CPC in 2008? What other things is the Congress party hiding from India on its relations with the CCP? Full disclosure needed," he tweeted.
The BJP has also accused the Congress party of doing China's bidding by pushing for a Free-Trade Agreement between India and China. "Donations showed results soon after. RGF did not just one but several studies on how an FTA between India and China is desirable and required. Studies argued that India needs the FTA much more than China and should pursue it as part of its efforts to improve bilateral relations!" Malviya tweeted.
OpIndia has reported that the Foundation received funds to the tune of Rs 1 Cr in three years from the Chinese regime.
Following the reports, psephologist Pradeep Bhandari demanded an investigation. "The Congress needs to come clean on the donations by Chinese to the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation. There should be an investigation if there is corruption, connivance and conspiracy," he said appearing on Republic TV.
