Narendra Modi, who was sworn-in as the 15th Prime Minister on Thursday evening, has taken his first decision.
It pertains to the Prime Minister’s Scholarship Scheme under the National Defence Fund. As per the new change, rates of scholarship have been raised from Rs 2,000 per month to Rs 2,500 per month for boys and from Rs 2,250 per month to Rs 3,000 per month for girls.
"Our Government’s first decision dedicated to those who protect India! Major changes approved in PM’s Scholarship Scheme under the National Defence Fund including enhanced scholarships for wards of police personnel martyred in terror or Maoist attacks," the PM said.
What is the National Defence Fund about? "The NDF was set up to take charge of voluntary donations in cash and kind received for promotion of the national defence effort, and to decide on their utilisation. The Fund is used for the welfare of the members of the Armed Forces (including Para Military Forces) and their dependents," says a government website.
