With Ben Affleck finally returning as Batman next year in two movies, many are wondering when Cavill will be back to don the iconic red cape. The actor, who currently stars in Netflix's The Witcher, was recently rumoured to appear at San Diego Comic-Con to reveal his imminent return, but that proved to be false. Although Cavill was absent from Comic-Con, a new report has offered a promising update surrounding his future as Superman.
In a conversation on Twitter Spaces between insiders Erik Davis of Fandango and Umberto Gonzalez from The Wrap, the two provided an update regarding Cavill's future in the DCEU. "The Multiverse has to stay, if they want to keep [Supergirl actress] Sasha Calle and bring back a new Superman or bring back Cavill or something, that's going to have to be the reality of it," Gonzalez said. Davis replied saying he had "heard a story that they've asked [Cavill], and he doesn't want to do it, he doesn't want to come back." Gonzalez, however, stated that the people at Warner Bros. Discovery "like [Cavill] as Superman."
Cavill portrayed the Man of Steel in the DCEU since 2013's Man of Steel, and again in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016, Justice League in 2017 and Zack Snyder's Justice League in 2021. The actor has been open about his desire to return to the DCEU, stating in a December 2021 interview that he still has his Superman suit and is "ready and waiting for the phone calls." In November 2021, Cavill claimed that he wasn't done with the Last Son of Krypton, believing that there was still "a lot more storytelling for him to do" as Superman.
However, reports have also claimed that the British actor is in talks with Marvel Studios for an unconfirmed role in the MCU. If that materialises, it would pretty much shut the door on any possible DC returns. On the other hand, DC currently has two Superman projects in the works - an HBO Max series starring the Val-Zod iteration and a rebooted movie from J.J. Abrams.
