The High Court of Madras is soon to deliver a verdict in the disqualification of 18 MLAs (supporters of R.K. Nagar MLA Dinakaran) by Speaker Dhanapal; the Court has postponed the next hearing sine die without informing the date of verdict.
It may be recalled that during the merger of the AIADMK factions, Speaker Dhanapal disqualified 18 MLAs supporting Dinakaran after they submitted a petition to Governor expressing their loss of confidence in the regime led by Edapadi K. Palaniswami. The disqualified MLAs moved the High Court of Madras which had been hearing the case for the past few months.
After the Court completed hearing the arguments on behalf of the Speaker and the counsel representing the MLAs, it postponed the next hearing without fixing any date for the same. The Court had earlier accepted written arguments furnished by the two sides. It has also said that if any additional information is to be given, the same ought to be submitted by Monday (29th January).
A verdict is imminent after next Monday and might be pronounced at any time after which several possibilities may occur in the State’s political scenario. If the Court sets aside the disqualification, the MLAs might move a no-trust motion in the Assembly against the EPS-OPS regime. The ruling AIADMK might be forced to opt for a ‘compromise’ with Dinakaran’s group which may not agree to any such thing.
