It has now almost become a regular feature for actor Kamal Haasan's films to run into trouble over titles. After the trouble over Sandiyar, which was eventually released as Virumandi, it is now the turn of his forthcoming venture titled Vasoolraja MBBS to face the music.
The Madras High Court today granted an interim stay on the release of the film after the Tamilnadu Medical Council filed a writ seeking a ban on the film owing to its title and the content which they claimed ridiculed the medical profession. Justice Balsubramaniam, who heard the plea, granted an interim stay and also ordered notice to Gemini Film Circuit (the production house). It may be recalled that the Tamilnadu Medical Council at its general body meeting recently, had resolved to file a writ in the Madras High Court to seek a ban on the film Vasoolraja,MBBS.
The petition filed by Tamilnadu Medical Council president K R Balasubramanian stated that the film's title ridiculed the medical profession and tarnished the image of the medical fraternity. Moreover, the film title is a mockery on the medical profession which would lower dignity of the medical fraternity in eyes of public. The petitioner contended that since the title brings disrepute to the entire medical fraternity, the court should ban the film's release.
Earlier, the Indian Medical Council had complained to the Censor Board not to give certification to the film which is a remake of the Hindi hit Munnabhai MBBS. 'But the Censor Board showed no interest in taking any action on the complaint' , the Council said. It may be noted that Kamal Haasan is donning the lead role of a comical dadha dabbling in medical field. The film, directed by Charan and produced by Gemini Film Circuit, also features Prabhu, Sneha, Praksh Raj, Nagesh among others.
The film was tentatively slated for 12 August release.
