The Telangana High Court on Monday put some tough questions to the state government over an affidavit filed by the latter in connection with Public Interest Litigations concerning the management of the second wave of the pandemic. In its questions to the Attorney General of the State, the HC said that it's unhappy with the "disappointing" affidavit.

At one point, the HC bench asked the government if it was trying to take Telangana to No. 1 position in Covid-19 cases.

The honourable court seemingly wants the State to impose stricter protocols to beat the second wave or avert it from worsening. At a time when there is a talk that the 50% occupancy limit will be reimposed in cinema halls, the HC asked the government what it has done to minimize footfalls in public places like theatres, malls, etc.

It's now clear that the judiciary wants to play an executive role in ensuring that Covid-19 measures are tougher than what the Centre's directives would warrant. It has to be seen if this will result in the promulgation of semi-failed ideas like night curfews.
