As reported earlier today, the Telangana High Court ordered the government to immediately ban the use and sale of firecrackers in Telangana. The petition seeking the same was filed by HC advocate Indra Prakash. Here is what he said about his intentions.

"I filed the PIL in view of the air pollution risks and the risk of spread of COVID-19 during Diwali. A few States have already banned firecrackers this year. The Kolkata High Court recently ordered a ban in West Bengal. The Supreme Court has backed the order," Prakash said.

He added, "The ban on bursting of crackers will keep those suffering from respiratory diseases, etc. safe. The High Court has said in its order that the government should create awareness through electronic and print media. By November 19, the government will have to submit a report on the steps taken in this regard."

Arbitrary decision:

Many are criticizing the order as arbitrary. It has come in the last minute when vendors have invested lakhs of rupees on buying stocks. And many consumers have already spent thousands of rupees.
