American motorcycle maker Harley-Davidson has shut shop in India. The world-famous automobile maker said in an official note that it expects to report $75 million in additional restructuring costs for this year just in India.
Discontinuing its sales and manufacturing operations in India are part of the restructuring effort. The company seeks to shift focus to core markets (like the US).
Annual sales volumes of Harley-Davidson in India account for less than 5% its global sales. Seventy employees have been laid off.
Commenting on the development, senior journalist Chandra R. Srikanth said, "Iconic bike maker Harley Davidson is exiting India- it will shut its manufacturing facility and is also reducing sales staff as part of a restructuring exercise. The dealer network will continue to serve customers. India's import tariffs on Harley was a big sore point for Trump."
