Ace director Hariharan, revealed during an interview that he had issues with Mohanlal over fixing the actor's remuneration. He said that he had approached the actor with a script, but that he was the least interested in even listening to it. Mohanlal has acted in two Hariharan movies.

Both these movies - 'Panjagni' and 'Amritumgamaya' were pivotal ones in his career. Hariharan revealed that it was Mohanlal who suggested that he be cast in 'Panjagni' instead of Nassarudin Shah whom Hariharan was planning to cast. He says that when Mohanlal was approached to act in another movie, he quoted an exorbitant remuneration, which amounted to the overall budget of the movie. Hariharan accused that Mohanlal did not lower his amount in spite of this.
